Policy
The bookstore is the only authorized university agency for the sale of photocopied materials. This position is necessary to protect the university from improper collection and reporting of state and local taxes that could result in possible legal liabilities. It also helps to protect the university in cases of copyright abuse.
For all photocopied material sold in the bookstore, permission must be obtained from the copyright holder. Permissions are obtained every time the packet needs to be sold and for every course for which packets are being used. Prior to photocopying material that will be sold in the bookstore, instructors must either obtain copyright permission on their own and produce a verifiable document, or use the DePaul Publications Group copyright research services. DePaul Publications Group assists in obtaining copyright permission by contacting the Copyright Clearance Center or by contacting the publisher directly. DePaul Publications Group will not begin photocopying until permission has been obtained. Receiving this permission may occur as quickly as one day, or may take several weeks. Instructors should allow at least three weeks on average.
Additional copyright policy information is available on the
university library Web site.
Procedures
The "Fair Use" guidelines, as defined in the
Agreement on Guidelines for Classroom Copying in Not-for-Profit Educational Institutions, provide assistance in determining occasions when copyright permission may not be required. A summary of these guidelines is available on the
DePaul Publications Group Web site.
